JUST ONE Tree partnership
I’m super happy to have partnered up with JUST ONE Tree (JOT)!
JOT is a non-profit community interest company removing CO2 from the atmosphere and reversing biodiversity loss through global reforestation. They provide a platform for individuals, schools and businesses to take collective action on rising global temperatures.
So, how does our partnership work exactly?
For every purchase, I donate £1 to JOT, and £1 plants 1 tree. It’s as simple as that!
Practically, it wouldn’t really work for me to pay JOT every time I’ve sold a product, I donate the amount every quarter which is their preferred way of working and this suits me perfectly as well. After each donation, I receive a receipt including my own tree counter and approximate CO2 sequestration.
Why do I support tree planting?
Trees are an essential part of the complex ecosystems on which our survival depends. They provide habitats and food for the world’s wildlife, clean the air, filter the water, and do so much more. Trees are truly amazing!
Unfortunately, deforestation is a real and serious problem, whether due to agricultural expansion (e.g., palm oil plantations, growing crops for livestock), wood extraction (e.g., logging or wood harvest for domestic fuel or charcoal) or infrastructure expansion such as road building and urbanisation. And very simply said without trees we would not survive… the air would simply not have enough oxygen for us to be able to breathe, but instead would have high amounts of carbon dioxide and other pollutants like carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide and nitrogen dioxide. But no trees is not just disastrous for the survival of most species on earth, just as the air the soil would become full of dangerous chemicals & pollutants and there would be no trees to protect the soil from erosion. Chronic draught would be another consequence and there are many many more sadly… . Having all this information at my disposal it only made sense to me to help counteract the ongoing deforestation.
Why I chose JUST ONE Tree?
I looked at several options before choosing my official planting partner and although they all do amazing work, I chose JOT because they do so much more than only planting trees.
Reforestation doesn’t start and end on land for JOT, through groundbreaking kelp forest regeneration in the Philippines and off the coast of Australia, they’re addressing the issues our oceans are facing too, such as ocean acidification, rising sea temperatures and marine biodiversity loss. Growing up to half a metre a day, kelp is the fastest-growing ‘tree’ on the planet. Like land-based trees, kelp absorbs CO2 in order to grow and is therefore an enormous ‘Blue Carbon’ sink. By taking carbon dioxide out of the oceans, kelp forests help lower the acidity in the seas and the amount of CO2 in our atmosphere.
On top of that JOT is bringing environmental education into thousands of classrooms across the UK, Europe and around the globe to help teach the next generations the importance of protecting our natural world.
